Sahuaro softball run-rules Scottsdale Chaparral for tournament title

Bergeson gets best birthday present ever, winning MVP

Celebrating your 18th birthday doesn't get any better for Amy Bergeson.

The Sahuaro senior outfielder, who signed with New Mexico State back in November, went 2 for 4 with two RBI in the title game to help the Cougars defeat Scottsdale Chaparral in a 10-0 five inning run rule game Saturday night.

Sahuaro, playing their first year under new head coach Jeff Fowler (who coached last year at Sabino), went 7-0 in the 17th Annual Desert Mountain Wolves Softball Invitational in Scottsdale, and Bergeson was named MVP of the tourney.

"It was just a great experience with my team, to be able to come out with a big win like that," said Bergeson. "I'm very proud of them. Being voted MVP just topped the win off, and especially that it was on my 18th birthday."

In reaching the championship game, the Cougars defeated CDO (Canyon Del Oro), who earlier in the season run-ruled Sahuaro, making that victory almost as sweet as the win over Chaparral for the title.

Meanwhile on the mound, freshman pitcher Lexy Coons struck out six, pitching a two-hitter.
